Expanding Our View of the World Through Current Events
My students need their own subscriptions to Junior Scholastic Magazine in order to learn more about the world and its issues in an age-appropriate format and writing style.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a curious, creative, and innovative bunch who come to school each day ready for the next set of challenges. They are eager to learn more about the world they inhabit. My students are interested and concerned about the social issues in the world they are learning about. They have developed an ever-growing sense of compassion to help those who have been hurt by hunger, poverty, and homelessness.
Sixty-one percent of students at our school are socioeconomically disadvantaged, and many children speak another language at home other than english.
Because of this rich, multi-cultural family background, my students are continually exposed to various perspectives, and they are eager to engage in conversations and projects that will lead them to a greater understanding of how others in the world live, work, and play. Our school and classroom is a place where students also benefit from our vibrant arts program in the four domains of the arts: visual, dance, drama, and music. There are also after school clubs in which any student may participate for free or a nominal fee.
My Project
Students will have a much easier time researching various topics and current events if they have their own subscriptions to a news magazine written just for them. Without access to quality journalism written especially for them, research sometimes becomes an arduous process in comprehending what they are reading. Finding articles on the Internet on current events can be time consuming and frustrating for students and their families. Scholastic Classroom Magazines have the added benefit of being available online, and students can use their subscriptions to do further research on the website.
The ability to access the magazine online, plus videos and other content-rich material is perfect for my students, who are digital natives and fully at-home online.
Since students have Chromebooks available to them each day, the digital magazine makes it easy to save information directly to their district assigned Google Docs and email accounts, making it easy to share information with classmates. The best part is, my students will learn more about themselves, their country, and the world they inhabit.
