My students need new percussion instruments and accessories including wind chimes, a bell kit, a gong, drumsticks, mallets, and cymbal stands as our music playing level continues to advance.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day in my classroom is loud, energetic, and fast-paced. I teach four band courses and two piano/music theory courses. My students work extremely hard to come together and develop their musical skills, both as soloists and as part of an ensemble.

My school is situated in the middle of a struggling community.

Our population is largely Hispanic, and many of our students are English Language Learners. The students at my school view many of our school organizations as a second family and support system.

My Project

Our band has only existed for the last six years, but we are making great progress every year. As the music we play gets more advanced and more complicated, so do the percussion parts. We have the basics we need to play beginning to intermediate level music, but now we are tackling more advanced music. So, we need this new equipment to accurately perform the music as the composers intended.

As the band's abilities grow, so does the rigor of their performances.

In order to keep up, we need to continue to build our inventory of instruments. The students take a great deal of pride in what they do and they deserve to have the best equipment available to create the music they love.

We will be performing songs including "Summertime," "I Dreamed A Dream," and "Portrait Of A Clown" that include parts using wind chimes, bells, gongs, and suspended cymbals.
