My students need a classroom library filled with diverse books like We Were Here, All American Boys, Chains: Seeds of America, and other books that expose them to various cultures and topics relevant to today's teenagers. I believe these authors will help my kids learn to LOVE reading.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our learning community has a population of roughly 2000 kids with nearly half coming from economically challenged environments.
My brilliantly clever students have yet to imagine the possibilities for their future.
They regularly delight me with their creativity and their desire to learn.
We come from diverse racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds so we work really hard in our classroom environment to gain a greater understanding of ourselves and others by asking questions and reading great literature and writing as often as possible.
My Project
While students should be able to connect their own experiences to literature, they should also be able to look into the lives' of others and learn from them.
I want my students to fall in love with the possibilities that books can offer.
Our in-class library is lacking culturally and topically diverse literature. My students need a classroom library filled with diverse books like We Were Here, All American Boys, Chains: Seeds of America, and other books that expose them to various cultures and topics relevant to today's teenagers. The addition of the books from this project will open windows into the lives of a variety of characters in many different situations, all relatable to today's teenagers.
Students will read independently as well as engage in literature circles, book clubs, and/or socratic seminars. With these books, they will take the lead in their learning.
