Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"That is part of the beauty of all literature. You discover that your longings are universal longings, that you're not lonely and isolated from anyone. You belong."
- F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Many of my students are looking to belong. I'd like to help them get there by giving them opportunities to re
We are a charter school located in California.
Our class of 8th graders is primarily Hispanic, and many of them have not had much exposure to the English language outside of visual entertainment. Many of them do not have models of sustained academic success in their families. The majority do not have the reading skills appropriate for their grade. They have the same typical desires as most young adolescents, but they often do not have high career expectations for themselves. Our school was built to support and prepare these students for a college education. I believe that giving them the opportunity to read a variety of books will help us in that goal.
My Project
"When I look back, I am so impressed again with the life-giving power of literature. If I were a young person today, trying to gain a sense of myself in the world, I would do that again by reading, just as I did when I was young."
- Maya Angelou.
Our students are required to have a reading book with them every day. By having these resources in our classroom, we will be able to expand the amount of books that the students are able to experience and enjoy. Reading is a skill that must be practiced, and it is much easier to get a student to read if they can conveniently grab a book that will challenge their reading level and meet their interests.
Our school does not have a large budget to provide new books for the students each year.
These students have a limited library of class texts to choose from, and they do not have many opportunities to read higher-level texts. Your donation will help them enjoy a challenging book that will help give them context and insight for their own lives.
