Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My favorite thing about my students is how diverse they are. They are Hispanic, Pacific Islander, Asian, African, Middle Eastern. We also have a large population of refugees. Our school is a Title I school, so my students face many unique challenges outside of school. I learn so much from these kids!

My students are fun, rowdy middle school kids, but they are also very kind and sweet.

I was thrilled to discover that most of my kids love to read. This makes my job as a reading teacher much easier! Their favorite part of my class is when I give them silent reading time. They are genuinely excited to be reading! I tell them all the time that they make my teacher heart happy.

My Project

Research shows that the best way to improve reading comprehension is to expand students' knowledge of the world. Because of this, we are trying to read more nonfiction books in our reading intervention class.

The books I chose are at a lower reading level; my students are behind in their reading due to the pandemic.

But the content is at an age-appropriate level, and I think these books will pique my students' curiosity and spark an interest in these topics.

I am also requesting some new titles in fiction with people of color as protagonists. I think my students will be excited to read these books!
