Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with nearly 80% of our students receiving free lunch. As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their academics and behaviors. Our students with special needs come to us, needing a variety of supports such as academic support, behavioral support, speech, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and assistive therapy. We are able to have students in Inclusion settings, Resource settings, and Essential Academics/Life Skills.
We are wanting to reach all of their sensory needs.
When we are supporting our student population, we are in need of many tools to support them in their areas of weaknesses. We are given lots of support from our campus, as well as our special education department in the district office. However, with a growing population in need of sensory needs, we need to fulfill our students' needs before their minds are able to be ready to learn. We are wanting to stimulate our students, as well as having our students to be able to release energy positively so we can focus in class.
My Project
Since our previous DonorsChoose.org project, we have created an entire sensory lab classroom that helps our students. Now I'm requesting a Light Cube and accessory kit, a Sand & Water table and top, one Curve-A-Beam, and a cardio mini cycle which will be used by students to explore and move.
With these sensory and movement items, we will be able to expand on reaching the sensory needs of our students.
We have seen a huge change in our students after we established our sensory room. Our students understand that they are able to come to the sensory room in order to release their energy and pick up their energy in order to get back in class and refocus. Our students have shown that they perform better when they are able to take one to three breaks throughout their school day.
