Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Some of my fondest childhood memories come from playing with technology at my house - building with Legos or putting together my newest robotics kits. Throughout elementary, middle, and high school I was lucky enough to take technology classes that had adequate supplies to supplement my exploration. It was through these opportunities that I developed my love for science and technology.
My students aren't so lucky.
As children from low-income communities, my students haven't had the opportunity to experience technology like many others have. At home, many of my students are happy to get some extra money for lunch, or are lucky enough to have access to a computer with the internet. Additionally, the arts and technology classes they have attended since elementary school has been systematically underfunded. As a result, my students haven't hand much, if any, opportunity to experience technology first hand and they are yearning for the chance to do so.
My Project
My students need 3Doodler pens to expand their exposure to technology. My science/engineering club students will use these pens to build 3D models of all types of engineering structures including bridges, buildings, cars, gears, and whatever else they are able to come up with. Specifically, these pens will help my students design and prototype their newest robotics creations before they begin to build them using traditional supplies.
Using 3Doodler pens will help my students gain valuable skills.
This technology will teach my students how to think creatively in multiple dimensions, a valuable skill which is hard for students to grasp and almost as difficult to teach. Furthermore, it will show them how fun and easy it is to get started working with technology. I know that this project will be the first step for some of my students towards a lifetime of building, designing, and engineering.
