I created a calming corner in my classroom this fall, and it has been a huge hit with my students. One of the things I would like to add more of is manipulatives and things they can build or create with - these have been the biggest hits, and so far I have been adding things like bracelet-making kits and art supplies on my own, but I would love to be able to add manipulatives and a store of craft supplies to the area to help stay ahead of the demand as we move into the spring semester, which is always so stressful!
One of the things that has been really interesting is the number of my students who tell friends about the corner, and the number of them who come in on their lunches or during our tutorial time to relax, to draw, to create something, to just chill out.
I want to be able to continue to support this and to open my classroom to students as a safe haven and restful spot to unwind, even if it is just for a few minutes. The supplies I have built into this project will enhance the calming corner and will fill up our art supplies to see us through the next semester.
This calming corner is one of the best things I have ever done in my teaching space. It shows the students I care and that I recognize they have feelings and emotions that are important and that deserve to be acknowledged. Please help me to continue to grow this area and provide emotional support for my students!
