Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are inquisitive, bright, and desire to understand why and how things work. When given the opportunity to explain their reasoning or provide examples of their work, although it may be difficult, they do their very best.
My upper grade students understand this is a crucial year for them in mathematics.
They are beginning to move from concrete examples to the abstract. However, many of my students need hands-on math tools in order to understand the concepts we cover.
The students in my classes are encouraging when faced with difficulties and celebratory when each student masters those hard concepts.
My Project
Fifth grade can be a particularly difficult year in mathematics. Students have been taught rational numbers, but now they begin to apply the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) to them. Using these operations can be difficult when applied to fractions & decimals, especially when the foundations of those concepts are shaky.
These math tools will help my students reach a deeper understanding of fractions & decimals so they can move on to using them with the four operations.
The tools will also help me explain they "why" in math that is so crucial to understanding these difficult concepts. Part of my project will also help extend students' understanding of fractions that we may not cover as a whole class.
These tools will be used in a small group setting, allowing me to teach specifically to students' needs.
