Do you remember your excitement after finding a book that had characters who reminded you of yourself? Or reading a book and being excited for learning and discovering something new after you've finished reading? My current classroom library is filled with great books but it does not represent the rich variety of cultures my students bring in to the classroom. My books also does not represent the wide range of topics we cover and learn in my classroom.
My 3rd graders are bright, enthusiastic, and zealous readers.
Their face brightens up when they finish another book and are able to share it with those around them. Having a wide range of books that represent the students and teach them to be global citizens would diversify their depth of knowledge and empathy. Being able to see their learning in a book would also grow their curiosity and deepen their understanding of a topic.
My Project
The books purchased will allow students to read books that mirrors their own or their classmates' cultures. They will be able to expand their minds outside of our little town and learn to connect with those around the globe. It will allow them to grow empathy and confidence in their own selves.
The books I have chosen to add onto the current classroom library encompasses my students' cultural background as well as their academic learning.
Pictures that reflect their own academic learning such as fractions and multiplications will help grow their interest in math. It will solidify their knowledge and deepen their learning. These new additions will grow their excitement for reading even more!
