Early childhood learning is unique. Research shows that students retain information best when they are learning it through hands-on activities and discovery, instead of just listening to a teacher talk.
I love to see how the children learn, grow, and develop in different ways and on different levels.
I live for the moments when those children discover that they can do something that was previously hard for them, or find something new that interest them and they want to learn more about!
Providing opportunities for the students in my class to learn and try developing their new skills is a hope of mine from year to year.
My Project
Kindergarten is always an interesting grade to teach as you have some students come into class knowing nothing and others who are reading and beginning to comprehend far beyond where they are expected. It is often difficult to allow those who are ahead to continue in their progression because we end up spending the most time catching up those struggling students in our class.
Students who are learning at a more advanced level deserve the chance to continuing growing and I need help to allow this to happen within my classroom.
The items on my project will allow the more advanced students in my classroom to learn the process of writing and to continue in their comprehension of the more difficult texts they are reading.
In our writing journals we will be able to utilize the storytelling cubes, sequencing cards, and many of the other center items to help build a story and then eventually turn those journal entries into a completed and finalized story book.
Often the students who come into my class reading at a higher level read very well but struggle to understand what they are reading. Using the non-fiction and fiction comprehension cards and cubes I plan to build on the knowledge they have and continue pushing them to expand upon their knowledge.
