My students are amazing and hardworking and deserve the best math education I can provide at the largest high school in Alaska. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, I had used vertical learning "on the walls!" to allow for physical movement and collaboration. It was so amazing to read Peter Liljedahl's book "Building Thinking Classrooms" last year to see the research supporting these methods. Students stand in random groups and build a classroom of collaboration, peer interaction, social-emotional connection, as well as increased confidence!
The vertical boards improve discussion, participation, and collaboration, both socially and academically, in ways that traditional lap whiteboards do not.
Our students need increased social-emotional connection and confidence in mathematics- especially after the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on their learning and well-being.
Students are more enthusiastic to keep attempting more difficult problems and worked to persevere when knowing they can make mistakes in a safe and fun environment!
