My Students

I teach in a 6-12 Horace Mann in-district charter school in a large urban district. We have about 85 students per grade level, making for a small, closely-knit school with the feel of a family. We pride ourselves on welcoming and meeting the needs of an extremely diverse student population. Our students are 90% minority, 85% free and reduced-price lunch, 30% special needs, and 15% ESL learners. Our faculty works to differentiate for our kids in the most inclusive environments possible, meaning that any one classroom will have a bright mix of all these populations.

The students you'll be particularly impacting make up our sophomore class -a bright, enthusiastic, eclectic bunch with a strong desire to challenge themselves.

I want to reward that commitment with materials befitting their level of engagement, providing them with books that will expand and challenge their world views, technology to support their ambitions, and a text-rich, literate environment that will encourage them to stretch and take the risks needed to further their education and development.

My Project

Last year, our school's ELA department launched an ambitious independent reading program that supplanted the tired, teacher-chosen texts our students weren't reading anyway with well-stocked, vibrant classroom libraries and time devoted in class to reading student-chosen books. Our efforts have been rewarded beyond our wildest dreams: kids READING, every day, happily invested in worlds and characters both like and unlike themselves, and reaping the benefits as they see vast improvements in their own writing.

My students have already read almost 200 books this year and are figuring out their reading identities and the kinds of stories they are passionate about - but we've hit a standstill: we're woefully short on the types of books and authors my students have discovered they love to read.

Our classroom library is almost entirely teacher-funded, and I can't keep up with the wealth of great new books from my students' favorite authors, from Neal Shusterman to Walter Dean Myers to amazing fantasy and science fiction by inspiring women of color. They are also in LOVE with graphic novels, which due to their gorgeous layouts and color are frequently cost-prohibitive for me to stock. It's such an exciting time in young adult literature, and I want to share this explosion of diverse authors, stories, and mediums with my budding readers. Contributing to this project will keep my students invested in their literacy, keep them excited about books, and help them continue to develop into lifelong READERS. No gift could be more far-reaching and impactful.
