My Students

Think about the last time you read for pleasure. What did you choose to read? Why? Our personal interest plays a large role when we select reading material; if we are not interested, we are not engaged! To develop a passion for reading students must have engaging books on their reading level.

Each day I work with 27 fantastic and energetic first graders at an amazing school in Indiana.

Our class has a great mix of learners with different needs, backgrounds and interests, including 6 English learners. Having such a wonderful mix of learners allows the students to not only assist one another when needed, but learn from each other as well. These 6 and 7 year olds come to my classroom every day ready to learn with infectious smiles on their faces. One of their favorite parts of the school day is gathering on the rug to hear the new read aloud; their faces light up with excitement as I pull out the new book from behind the easel. I want them to have this same excitement when they go to the classroom library to select their own book to read for pleasure.

My Project

In order for students to have an enthusiasm for reading when self-selecting reading material they need to have a wide variety of books to choose from that interest them, but are also on their reading level. As a first year teacher in the classroom I haven't yet acquired books for a full classroom library. My students have learned how to select a "Just Right" book, but are running out of books to choose from. With these new materials students will look forward to going to the classroom library, they will be able to practice selecting "Just Right" books for many more months, they will be able to listen to many more interesting read alouds as they gather on the rug for their favorite part of the day, not to mention all of the new schema and background knowledge they will gain simply by reading!

As Patricia Polacco says in one of her many extraordinary children's books, "Knowledge has to be chased through the pages of a book." The more we read, the more we learn and know.
