I want to expand the horizons of my students. My two 4th grade classes consist of a total of around fifty students who were impacted by Hurricane Katrina last August, and some of them, including myself, are still living in FEMA trailers. During the school day, I use a variety of techniques, including group work, to teach math, science and social studies, which includes having them do research in science and social studies on the various topics we are studying. Our Power Mac hums at us and works very slowly. I would like to get two computers for the students to use. I want to teach them to utilize a computer as a learning tool and the Internet as a research tool. The students would be able to do searches quicker and be able to create their group reports with a machine that didn't take three to five minutes to down load one page or freeze sometimes on every other page. We can use these computers for all three areas that I teach. They would be invaluable assets to our room. I also feel that my students would benefit because basic computer skills can be used for the rest of their lives. And lastly, it will make this a place where they can learn about life quickly, and become a productive member of our society.
