Expand Our Asian American Pacific Islander Titles for English Learners
Help me give my students a variety of books by Asian Pacific Islander authors that will motivate them to read more often and will make our ELD classroom independent reading library more inclusive and contemporary.

My Students
My students are all English Language Learners, new to this country within the last two to six years. From Guatemala, Vietnam, Yemen, Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, China, Vietnam and the Philippines, they are enrolled in my class for one period a day. They join their English fluent peers for six other courses.
My English Learners students are eager scholars even as they deal with poverty, immigration difficulties, separation from family/friends, violence and PTSD.
They work hard in class but often struggle to stay focused for a variety of reasons. They are less likely to have parents who can help them in the evenings with schoolwork due to language barriers and/or work schedules. They may be working full-time jobs themselves and sleeping very little at night. In some cases, my students have no adult at home because they are in America unaccompanied.
My Project
Last year one of my most reluctant readers in English Language Development, a 15-year-old boy from the Philippines, apologized to me that he had not brought his new independent reading book back after the weekend. It turns out he had finished it, and then his brother also had fallen in love with the book, which had a Filipino protagonist and a setting the brothers fondly remembered.
That type of enthusiasm and connection with literature is exactly what I am hoping for with this project.
And, just to be safe, I am ordering multiple copies of most books. This project is aimed at giving my Asian American Pacific Islander students a better selection of books by authors and protagonists who share their culture.
