Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of my students are first-generation immigrants from China or Hong Kong. They come to school every day eager to explore and learn new things. Our school is located near an area where most new immigrants have settled. Most of our families face challenges economically.

Over 70% of the students qualified for free or reduced-price school lunch.

They have the disadvantage of not being read to in their early years. They also do not receive much help with homework from their parents due to a language barrier.

My Project

Most of my first graders know how to count. They only use the counting strategy to show me their Math thinking. Without a clear visual presentation tool, it is very hard for them to extend their Math thinking beyond their comfort zone. The ten frames whiteboard template enables me to engage my students in classroom math talk with a visual tool. The problem-solving whiteboards and erasers provide them with a variety way of presenting their ideas which in turn will stimulate their verbal expressions in math. In addition, students will be able to develop their logical thinking in math and to apply it in different realms of their learning.
