Exercising Our Body to Focus Our Minds

Help me give my students a variety of exercise pathways that can allow our body to move and our mind to focus with these carpet markers!

My Students

I teach students with a variety of sensory and academic needs in an urban elementary school. My students come to my classroom for support in academics, sensory and behavioral concerns. They often work independently, in small groups or individually with an adult to accomplish their academic task.

My students are energetic, curious and knowledge seeking.

Our school is a large public school where 100% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch due to the economic needs of our families. As a school we have a 74% passing rate for state appointed standardized tests. My students have needs beyond basic academics. They seek support regulating sensory input, organization, emotional stability, and social skills. My students work to make steps to success every day. Sometimes they need items to help them regulate their emotions.

My Project

Carpet markers will help us create exercise activities for our students in my classroom and in the hallway. These activities can be easily changed to accommodate different groups of students. These exercise pathways, made with the carpet markers, can include places to walk, jump, crawl and roll.

Exercising the body through jumping, twisting, breathing, crawling and deep pressure, can help students to refocus on academic learning.

All students can benefit from guided movement throughout the day. This allows another option for our students to obtain movement.

We always look for items that can be kept clean throughout our school. These carpet markers will allow us to make exercise pathways and still be able to be vacuumed on a daily basis.
