This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are children with special needs. Their primary disability is autism. Many of them have secondary disabilities that range from speech impairments to intellectual disabilities. They live in a low socioeconomic area. Many are second language learners as well. The school they attend is highly supported, but with limited resources, it is difficult to provide everything.

These students have very high needs, and they often go without critical resources.

They thrive in an environment that is supported with visuals to explain what something is in a way they understand. Some also use visuals to communicate.

My Project

Our special needs students have a lot of challenges developing their gross motor skills. It is not easy helping them close their gross motor gaps, because we have very limited resources to assist us with this task. Our school has no playground, and our students seldom get the opportunity to go to neighborhood parks. This has been especially true in the months we have been trying to recover from Hurricane Harvey.

Having an exercise bike and tunnel will allow us to give our students training and exercise that is vital to their gross motor development.

It will give us the means to provide this training in our motor lab. It gives us the resources to give them extra training above and beyond a general education p.e. class. Without this extra training, their skill level will continue to fall behind that of their neuro-typical peers.
