This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Help my students develop the vocabulary needed to show what they truly know! Sometimes it's not that they don't know the answers, it's that they don't understand the question. Vocabulary skills are so limited, they sometimes can't even fully express what they have done over the weekend.
I teach students from a lower socio-economic background.
They are bright children, but often have wide learning gaps and/or environmental situations that severely limits their learning. The children tend to use a lot of informal/slang language. Most of them are Hispanic and come from homes where Spanish is the dominant language. If English is the primary language, the grammar usage/modeling by their parents is often not at a level that will promote a higher level of achievement in school. My classroom is inclusive, meaning that I collaborate with a Special Education teacher to service children with varying degrees of learning difficulties or physical limitations.
My Project
Next year, I will be collaborating with yet another teacher to departmentalize instruction. I will only be responsible for teaching Reading, Writing, and Vocabulary/Grammar while she will be responsible for Math, Science, and Social Studies.
I want to transform our classroom so that it essentially becomes a Language Arts Lab. I want to make sure to provide the necessary resources so that all students can be engaged in a meaningful language experience, regardless of their academic ability level. Centers will be a vital part of the classroom because they will facilitate differentiated instruction.
Aiding my students in their language development will have a huge impact in their day to day learning as on their performance on state tests.
Day to day, they will be better equipped to participate in classroom discussions, express their thoughts in writing, and make better connections across the varying content areas. It will increase their confidence overall. When it comes to testing, they will have one less road-block to overcome.
