Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are running out of interesting reading books! I was just able to get my students into reading novels. However, they have already read all of the books I have about Latino teens. They need more novels that they relate to and find enjoyable.

My students are middle school pupils who receive special education services.

They live in a rough neighborhood and attend a school district where only 50% of the students graduate. They are just starting to find a love for reading with a number of high-interest, low-level reading books in my classroom. I have the books on CD which make the novels accessible for all of my students. However, the students have read all of my books featuring Latino teens. While I expose my students to a variety of stories and texts, I find that the kids are able to really connect to stories featuring main characters from their own culture. Considering the fact that many of them had not read a book cover to cover before working with me, I am happy to provide them with any novels they enjoy reading. And why not give them books from the award winning series, 'Urban Underground'?

My Project

I am asking for small group sets of four different novels featuring Latino teens. These are stories of struggling students that my class can relate to. Along with each small group set I am requesting an audio version of the story so my students can listen as they fallow along (a great strategy to improve fluency). I am also asking for a teacher's guide for each story in order to help guide the small group discussions and to help hold them accountable for reading the story.

If my 7th and 8th graders don't read independently their reading improvement will be stunted.

If they do not improve their reading, the chances are strong that they will drop out of high school. Their outlook will be dismal if they drop out of high school in their gang infested neighborhood. These books really can make a significant difference. Please help my students have a brighter future.
