5th grade students at my school are given the challenge of reading 40, 150-page books by the end of the year. Many of my children, even the ones who have never been excited about reading, have accepted this challenge and are enthusiastically reading everything they can get their hands on. This year, I have gotten several new books into my classroom and the students have fought over who gets to read them first! I am a newer teacher and unfortunately, have a lot of older books that have been given to me from former teachers. I would love to add newer books to my library, so my kids can continue to get lost in the wonderful adventure books that are out there today.
My Project
My students are eagerly gobbling up every word they can to complete the 40-book challenge set for 5th grade. Many of my students are motivated by fantasy adventures and they love to read sets of books so that the adventure lasts longer. Reading larger stories such as Harry Potter, the 5 kingdoms and the Land of stories will help them read larger amounts of books and be excited to finish the story faster. With these books my students will have a greater variety of books to choose from in my classroom library. At the beginning of the year, we have a book walk in my classroom to see different books that I have in my library, many students told me after that they felt like more fantasy/ adventure books were needed. The books that I have on my list are geared for those students because I have so few in my classroom library. My hope is that by having whole series will help get even my most resistant readers to read a book because they wont have to wait for the next book in the series to be available at either the school or public library.
