I teach middle level students who are learning English as a new language. The majority come from the Philippines and the island nations of Micronesia. They need language support to be successful in their regular classes, as well as navigating their new environment.
I believe that language learners learn best through peer collaboration with hands-on, visual learning opportunities.
I aim to provide students a lot of opportunities to interact with the core content they are learning. I also strongly believe in arts-integration as a powerful tool for learning.
My Project
Many of my students are struggling readers. Finding reading material that is interesting and age-appropriate can be hard. Thankfully, Scholastic makes an incredible magazine called Action that my students love!
Our library has a subscription, but I would like to bring a subscription for each of my 6th graders!
They will love getting to read and discuss the articles in class, and it will help enhance their language abilities.
I would also like some book boxes to keep materials separated and organized in the classroom, as well as magnetic strips and clips to properly display important information on our whiteboard.
