This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come in eager to please and be loved. They want to be recognized for achievements through "shout-outs" and rewards. They are funny and playful. The relationships and family atmosphere we create in the classroom is always the highlight of my school year.
My school is located on the Southside of Chicago.
The neighborhood is known for violence and poverty. The school is 100% free or reduced-price lunch. It not only creates a safe haven but also teaches the students to look beyond their surroundings and reach for higher goals. We are not just trying to get them into great high schools, but great colleges.
My Project
After Spring Break, some students "check out" and need extra motivation to by actively participating in class. I plan on doing just that by leading them through an exciting novel study.
Chasing Vermeer is a fun mystery novel full of different adult and kid characters that my students will love to follow.
We will specifically be studying the vocabulary, character development, and theme. These are the areas that my students struggled the most on from the beginning of the year, so this will be a review and extension.
We will end the unit with a cumulating activity, which will coincide nicely with the end of the school year.
