Exciting Graphic Novel Library

My students need graphic novels to engage them into reading. I receive daily requests for more substantial series and novels turned into graphic novels.

My Students

I take pride in having a substantial resource of books that my students can enjoy. They are constantly discussing books with me outside of the classroom and it is a common trend that they will share with me novels they have picked up and have enjoyed. As an ELA teacher, it makes my job enlivening.

My students are a widespread mix of reading levels.

However, the one thing they can agree upon is their love for Graphic Novels. High interest books, like graphic novels, give students who may not normally pick up a book give it a try. One of my students was so enthralled with the Bone series, his otherwise antithetical behavior during homeroom was sidelined as he grabbed the last Bone book he was reading and sat quietly, not letting anything or anyone get him off track. Furthermore, he constantly discusses the novels to me and asks what else I can offer him. I would like not to be at a disadvantage in that discussion.

My Project

My students are on a variety of reading levels. Having high interest books within my book cache means that at any moment, a student can express an interest in a particular genre, author or series, and I will make sure to find that book and pull it out right away for them. The graphic novels I currently have are constantly being borrowed, read, and reread. Students are drawn to the visuals and are discussing with each other the books they are reading, as well as myself. I have already purchased the entire Bone series, the Lightning Thief series (as is available so far in graphic novel form), and the Amulet series. I cannot keep any of the series on my shelves for long. They are my fastest movers. I take pride in discussing books with my students and am constantly looking for more graphic novels at their reading levels which they can enjoy. I am working out of boxes to display my books, so a foldable bookcase would be ideal to display now and box up later.

With technology today, my students are not reading books as much as they should.

I feel that the more chances my students have to get a book in their hand, the better off they will be on tests and in life. Even students who may have focusing or reading disabilities are passionate about reading if they just have a gateway to lead them into it. Each student has a different access point, and I do my best to reach all of them before they leave me.
