Help me give my students the Van de Graaf generator to use for exciting demonstrations about electrostatics.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Aki's classroom raised $859

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students love hands-on activities using technology! Who doesn't? It is a great way to see the abstract concepts come to life and become relatable and relevant to them. Students are applying their skills in defining problems, proposing solutions, planning and designing experiments, collecting and analyzing data. But before they can master these skills, they also need demonstrations of concepts in order to know which questions to investigate.
This Van de Graaf Generator will be exciting tool in our classroom for students to use to demonstrate electrostatics and the properties of electric charges.
The generator will help students understand how electrical energy is converted from mechanical energy. It will be an experience to remember for students to see their hair stand with the static electricity that the generator can produce as they give it the the right amount of cranking speed. Static electricity is something that we all encounter on a daily basis given the right conditions. I want to provide my students the instrument to see this and dig deeper into the science behind it. I am hoping that the relevant experiences that they receive in the classroom will inspire my students to be problem solvers in our community and maybe become scientists or engineers in the future.
