My Students

I teach 7th and 8th grade English Language Arts at an awesome school in West Philadelphia. All of my students have big dreams. I try my hardest to create a classroom environment that supports my students' dreams, fosters self-love and mutual respect, pushes them to persevere when academics get hard, and teaches them to think critically about our world!

Even though my students come to me from a variety of challenging home environments, many of them still come to school full of life and ready to learn everyday.

I teach at a Title I school where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. My students family income, gender, and race should not keep them from having access to the best education possible! I have created this page in hopes to try to level the playing field by providing my students with more opportunities to succeed both academically and socially.

My Project

Black students and students of color often do not see themselves in the books we are provided to read in school. As a teacher, it has always been my goal to change this. Every year, I set out to create a classroom where my students will see themselves, will know they matter, will grow as readers, and will be given the tools to think critically about and change our world. Becoming strong and critical readers is a key skill to academic success and to being able to make societal change.

Using culturally relevant, anti-racist, and engaging novels helps me to facilitate a classroom environment that empowers my 7th and 8th graders' voices while simultaneously providing them with rigorous academic instruction to set my students up to achieve their dreams.

Your donations will allow me to have a class set of texts for both my seventh and eighth grade students to read during planned thematic units throughout the school year and will lead to many critical conversations around social justice in my classroom.
