My Students
I teach first grade for a new and upcoming charter school whose mission it is to help every student reach his/her academic potential using research-based teaching and learning practices.
Our charter school works to provide a safer and more positive learning environment for students who live within an urban area where bullying in elementary schools runs rampant.
We like to encourage students to take a higher degree of responsibility for their own education by offering many avenues for choice and independent participation in their school experience. Students also have opportunities to participate in various before/after school programs fitting to their individual interests. Because of the ownership we encourage, students are happy, well-adjusted and confident in their successes at school. Unfortunately my school also lacks funding for technology and literacy. I hope to give our first graders greater access to 21st century tools that will enhance the opportunities for my students to succeed in the real world, while mastering core content this year.
My Project
This year, I have implemented a special learning portfolio program to show parents what goes on in their child's classroom during the day. Using iPad technology to capture photo, voice recording and video, my first graders are broadcasting their best work and academic successes real-time to their parents. We currently share a few iPads with the other 100 first graders to accomplish the sharing of this portfolio.
Along with the portfolio, we use the iPads for small group instruction--including phonics, math, reading, spelling, and social studies skill practice. Because we are constantly running out of time for the use of this technology, we are requesting 5 iPads for our individual classroom to use daily.
Students will be able to use the iPads in the classroom to take snapshots of their academic work more regularly and consistently, as well as use them for the engaging practices of important academic skills.
Engagement is a BIG bonus for introducing new technologies into the classroom.
My students LOVE being able to use the iPads in these innovative ways. Having easier access to this technology will most certainly give students excitement as they learn important foundational skills, motivation to perform at a higher level, as well as the time to adequately share ideas and creativity with others.
