Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students live by the C.A.R.E.S. core values - Caring, Appreciative, Responsible, Empathetic and Steadfast. All of our students show grit and determination even in the face of uncertainty. But after the previous year, we want to make sure that we are focusing on helping our children grow into thinkers, doers and risk takers by using books where they see themselves in the characters. Please join us in our quest for additional reading materials to add to our classroom library.
My Project
My students need to see themselves in what they read. Heroes and heroines come in all colors. I want my students to pick up a book and see the value in themselves through the protagonists they read about. My students live in the South Bronx and have limited resources to identify with. How can I empower them to strive to become the best versions of themselves when they don’t see their value? I am so grateful for resources like Mahogany Books because I can provide stories, read alouds and discussions that will positively impact/challenge their mindsets to help them discuss race, social justice and existing in a world where they have had no voice. My students are amazing and I know they will benefit from stories that they can not only relate to but will want to emulate.
