My Students

Do you remember sitting in the classroom, listening to the teacher and never getting to practice skills that were being taught with anything other than worksheets? My students are creative and enthusiastic. I want them to keep the love for learning with hands on literacy center activities.

My classroom has students from a variety of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.

They are excited to come to school and learn. My students are like so many others from around the world. They come from a variety of home lives where some are supported in school, and others are not. I want to give them every opportunity to enjoy and be successful in school. Research has shown that when students are successful in lower elementary grades, they are more likely to graduate high school and not drop out. We are a public school in a rural setting in North Carolina. We are a high-poverty school.

My Project

The resources I have asked for include a Instant Vocabulary Center and a Reading Comprehension center that can be used immediately after they are taken out of the box and explained. I use literacy centers for approximately one hour everyday in the classroom. The skills used in these centers are taught and reinforced daily in second grade. The vocabulary center will build skills needed in reading and writing to understand parts of a word and how the parts work together. It also has activities for synonyms, antonyms, and homophones; which are all taught in second grade. The reading comprehension center will be a great asset to practice comprehension strategies that we focus on each week. Students will be able to use the centers independently or with partners. They will also be able to self-check their work and correct their mistakes. This is important for learning and writing skills.

By giving to this project, you will give learning opportunities to students who need more practice learning new concepts and skills.

These two centers will allow students in my classroom time and practice with materials that would otherwise be unavailable due to the current economy. These centers will be used not only this year, but for many years to come which will reach hundreds of students in my school.
