My Students
Do you remember when you were in elementary school and you had a P.E. class a few times a week with an actual teacher and equipment? Today there are more and more demands on children to read and write and succeed in math and essentials like Physical Education are getting cut.
I teach second graders in a rural community on the north shore of Hawaii.
We have a small school which does not have a P.E. teacher. As the classroom teacher I am required to provide the students in my class with 120 minutes of P.E. each week. While we have a nice grass field, we have no gymnasium or equipment for P.E. which makes it difficult to implement new activities. Studies have shown that students who are active physically on a daily basis have higher academic achievement. Childhood obesity is also on the rise with parents working longer and students in front of televisions, computers and video games for hours on end.
My Project
I am requesting a variety of simple P.E. equipment that most schools should have. I have recently undergone training in the SPARK P.E. program which is a wonderful curriculum to get all students up and moving. Equipment such as bean bags, hula hoops and balls are essential for the curriculum to be fun and challenging. The list of equipment should be enough for a class of 20 for a variety of different activities.
Recent studies have shown that students who are involved in sports and regular physical activities perform better academically and socially.
Physical education not only gets their bodies moving but also their minds. It builds confidence, teamwork and gets students excited in school. Your donations to this project would help make a well rounded P.E. program for my students.
