We are busy arranging and rearranging our supplies with our student project managers. One of our managers has been able to experience many calming rooms and has been instrumental in us being able to design a very effective space for students needing a safe and peaceful place to regroup. \r\n\r\nThe reaction to the materials and the overall design of the room was so adorable! Our mixed band of student helpers all quickly realized they had been a part of a good and helpful project. This brought them each a sense of pride. \r\n\r\nNext, we plan on pre-shopping for some additional items that will enhance our calming room. Students who are afforded a space and time to regroup and calm their anxious selves are more inclined to return to class and learning more quickly and more effectively than having an office referral and a visit to the office. So, working to build a wonderful space for calming is important. Teachers, Educational Aides and our counselors have brought students to the Aloha Mediation Room to give students in need the opportunity to resolve issues in a peaceful manner with the help of their peers. They practice new calming techniques, and help each other to be ready to return to class with confidence and resolution. The best result is that students themselves are beginning to recognize when they need a moment to regroup in the Aloha Mediation Room. \r\n\r\nThe initial reaction to the Aloha Mediation Room was incredible! The student peer mentors were excited to explore their new digs and test out the comfy seating and the tools for calming. Now when small disagreements happen in class or on the playground, these peer mediators are equipped to help their fellow students resolve issues and return to class with greater compassion and empathy. \r\n\r\nNext, we would love to expand this campus practice. Having students trained to help other students resolve their peer issues is far more effective than simply referring them to the office. Students in crisis see that other students, their friends and classmates, are capable of helping to resolve smaller issues without referrals, without the stigma of being sent to the principal or vice principalʻs office. The result is a greater sense of peace, safety and calm on campus. We canʻt wait to do more! With the hands-on materials like magnetic dots, markers, and whiteboard tools, students also get to create their own \"I Spy\" challenges, practice writing letters, and sort pictures and words, turning reading time into an active and playful learning experience.\r\n\r\nThe children are absolutely loving these new books. Many of our reluctant readers are now eager to read because the pages feel like a fun game, and our English language learners are gaining confidence as they use the pictures to understand new words. The kickoff tee has provided students with an opportunity to practice kicking technique and accuracy in a safe and consistent way.\r\n\r\nThe storage bins have also made a noticeable difference in keeping equipment clean, organized, and easy to access. It was amazing to watch their teamwork and problem-solving skills grow as they tested ideas and learned from one another.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the bright magnetic tiles and colorful building blocks, they could hardly contain their excitement—some even clapped and cheered!
