Our school is located in south Georgia. Many students come from low-income homes. They do not have the resources in their home to build and think outside of the box. In our down time or for rewards I would love to create an area where students can explore STEM bins to expand their minds and be creative. My students have always loved STEM projects in the past. They believe they are just having free time and playing, when they are actually being scientists, mathematicians, architects, artists and so much more.
My Project
My students will use STEM bins to explore and build. Students need some down time during their educational experiences. The items I have chosen will be used in a STEM bin area in our classroom. Using STEM bins to help take their minds off the rigor of academics from time to time will help them stay more engaged during instructional times. Students will think it is just a brain break, but they are learning how things work while build and exploring with these materials. Students will be scientists, mathematicians, architects, artists, engineers and so much more while thinking they are just playing and having fun. Each item on my wish list will be used as a hands-on solution for early finishers, morning work, centers, fine motor practice, indoor recess, or positive reinforcement of behavior. These items provide open-ended and developmentally appropriate foundation of engineering for elementary students.
