My Students
I am lucky to teach an amazing group of children with intellectual disabilities in my special education self contained classroom. My students love school! They look forward to coming to our classroom everyday, and interacting with their peers. They also enjoy learning, and have tons of energy and sensory needs. They are excited for all academic lessons and activities. They show great pride when they complete lessons, and achieve goals. At times their sensory needs can interfere with their learning.
I want to create a classroom that my students feel is a comfortable and inviting space that meets all of their physical and learning needs.
My students have sensory and behavior needs that make it more difficult for them to sit in a hard chair during a lesson. Flexible seating will allow them to have a choice in their seating. It has been proven that flexible seating such as stability balls, bean bags, large pillows, and cushions can help "busy" students give their body something to do so their brain can focus. My students have to spend much of their day focused on academics which can be challenging for them. They deserve a learning space that meets their sensory needs.
My Project
These stability balls, soft cushions, bean bags and large pillows will help my students be able to move their bodies while they work in our classroom. Differentiated seating better helps a child perform to the best of their ability. They are more comfortable, can change positions as needed, and provide sensory input and output they need. I have slowly added some flexible seating to my classroom but can not wait to see how these new items will greatly improve student work and focus!
My students need to be their wiggly selves while in their learning environment.
When children have some freedom of movement they are able to focus on the task at hand. Flexible seating allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow, and core strength. Doing this gets that extra energy out during the day, keeping their brains more alert and focused. Students that are uncomfortable are unfocused and more than likely to not follow classroom expectations. We have to create learning environments that set out children up for success!
