Exceptional Needs Students Can Excel in Reading

My students need low leveled high interest books to increase their reading & improve their reading comprehension.

My Students

My students are 6-8th grade Exceptional Needs in an urban, public, neighborhood school in the third largest district in the country. My school has been on academic warning status with the state for 11 years due to low test scores. My school enrolls 432 students in an old building that can hold 750. I have my own room. We have fairly new laptops for each student in every classroom. Outdated Smartboards are used as a screen to project on from an Elmo. My school community is 100% African-American & 96% low income. Students live within the school boundaries. Many students are victims of trauma. The area is gang & crime crime infested. Frequent police, fire & ambulance sirens & train chimes are heard during the day.

My Project

My students have shown instances of rebellion and anxiety in their inclusion setting due to their embarrassment of having limited to low reading ability and will exhibit inappropriate behavior when they don’t want other students to know. For example, when a general education teacher noticed a student had not completed their assignment (a class assignment that had not been differentiated), they redirected the student verbally in front of the whole class. The students response included yelling saying, “This is stupid!” and storming out of the classroom.

I chose this project because my students have limited and low reading ability.

They need low leveled high interest books so they can increase their love of reading & be able to utilize reading strategies to better comprehend text.
