Our high school is in a diverse portion of Virginia that has an extraordinary amount of single-parent households, indigent families, and military kids, who are often displaced from location to location. There are many exceptional students in the music program. The band room is their second home! These musicians are intuitive, intelligent, and creative students. These students, as well as the entire music program, have been fundraising since school started. They have sold chocolate, worked at the concession stand at athletic events, and asked for donations. Despite their commitment to raise funds for the needed instruments, they fell short.
Becoming a member of our high school music program can benefit students in so many ways.
For those who are just entering high school, the music program can become an instant family of friends and help make a somewhat scary transition so much easier. For everyone involved, the skills learned in our music program to achieve quality performance levels are the same skills that will make these students successful individuals, no matter what they choose to do in life. The members of our music program are completely committed to self-discipline, individual responsibility, and excellence.
Most of our students' equipment is outdated, with some dating back to the 1970's. This dated equipment is no longer producing the sounds that showcase the students' talent. The students will have more ownership of the newer equipment because the sounds coming from them will finally fit the music. The community needs to be proud of our abilities to play these instruments and to show them that where they is a will, there is a way. The challenge that this project will solve is that we will finally be able to diversify our band and our sound, as opposed to the limited selection of instruments that we currently have.
