My Students

I teach in an urban school that serves a very diverse population of students where 92% of the students receive free or reduced price lunch. We serve immigrant families new to the country and bilingual students as well as special education students. We provide Title I, academic intervention and ESL services. Our school mission focuses on developing life-long learners and responsible citizens. We provide special education, academic intervention, Title I, and ESL services. My goal as an educator in my fifth grade classroom is to provide a differentiated learning environment that will help my students develop confidence and self-esteem, achieve academic success and engage in the love of learning through collaborative teamwork.

My fifth grade classroom is comprised of 28 amazing students, many of whom come from bilingual households and receive free or reduced price lunch.

My students have very diverse needs and it is my job to provide engaging, differentiated instruction to meet those needs in a safe, fun, learning environment where collaboration and teamwork are fundamentals in problem-solving and educational exploration.

My Project

The fifth grade curriculum requires a lot of abstract thinking, which has led to many frustrated students. We use math manipulatives, such as fraction tiles or geometry structures to give students the opportunity to visualize math concepts and better understand how math works. There are many tricks in math, but tricks do not teach the logic and reasoning behind the skill. Adding extended individual practice on their iPad will help students further expand their knowledge and understanding of all the math domains.

Providing different learning styles, whether it is technology or hands-on manipulatives, is essential on the road to success.

Last year, I incorporated IXL into whole class, small group and individual lessons using the daily limit of practice problems that IXL provides for non-subscribers. From a teacher's perspective, purchasing a subscription would allow me to assign lessons scaffolding the mini lesson as well as assess standard-aligned skills. I will be able to individualize small group lessons and independent work targeting high priority standards and differentiate to meet each student's needs.

My students will benefit from the interactive practice targeting their individual needs for all of the high priority benchmarks in math. Students will have access to various grade levels to meet their needs. IXL also provides a help link listing examples to support and ensure that all students understand the concept being taught. Students are able to work at their own pace and level giving every student in my class a sense of accomplishment as they track their progress. Not only will my students be able to practice their math skills during the school day, but also during the after school program and at home.
