This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In the Spring, my students will be running a candle making business. They will be researching the different aspects of running a successful enterprise and will focus on how to set a price for their products so that their business can thrive.
The students will use different materials like candle tins and ceramic jars and fill them with candle wax.
They will use the factors of production to determine pricing. The clay will give students a chance to take an even more hands-on approach in creating a handmade product for consumers. They will make ceramic jars and will measure the volume of the jars to determine what kind of wick to use and how much candle wax they’ll need to fill their vessels.
This will require students to tap into skills they learned in geometry class for this economics project. After this, students will calculate the cost of labor and capital in order to set a price. They will see that adding ceramic jars to their line of candles will increase the cost. Students will understand how many businesses start off with small operations and then begin to scale to bring in more profit. These supplies will make this project possible. Students benefit from experiential learning and the clay would bring a tactile component which will make this project stand out in their minds for years to come.
