This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
High school has its high's and low's, the "have's" and the "have not's" as life does I suppose. Unfortunately for my students, disappointments come more often than rewards.
However they have a resilience that keeps coming back year after year to the classroom.
Every year, the students resist less and less because of the stories they have heard of strangers who help my classroom procure books. I hope, with a little bit of luck, this can continue. I can feel something special happening with their learning.
My Project
This project is going to be an amazing way to end the school year! The book "The Hate U Give" by Angie Thomas is a high interest novel that addresses the issues my students face daily. Topics such as: current trends in society, blended families, politics and community relationships with police.
The topics discussed in the book allow for a smooth transition for them to practice with argumentative writing.
This skill will be the focus for them at the start of the 2018 School Year when they return. These kids will be in the Advanced Placement Language Course which focuses on argumentative writing.
