I teach in one of the most diverse schools in the United States. My students come from the expensive houses in the hills and from some of the poorest neighborhoods on the other side of the highway. 57% of my students are on free or reduced lunch. They are White, Black, Asian, and Hispanic. All of my students have chosen to be in my class. I teach 8th grade honors English. Students do not test in to my class, but choose to take this rigorous course. They all bring with them a love of learning and an excitement about the topics we cover.
My students are creative and inquisitive.
They love creating projects and doing research on topics that interest them. They are readers and writers. They eat up knew books, but don't often have access to the latest titles for young adults. I do my best to get them what they need, but also rely on donations from the community to get them the resources for their learning that they need and deserve.
My Project
"The Hate U Give" is the most relevant and powerful books written for young adults this year. My students will benefit greatly from reading and studying this book. Many of my students will see themselves and their experiences in a book for the first time. Others will get a glimpse what it is like to be a black teenager living in the United States. This is a powerful book that should be on the required reading list of all young adults in this country. It will lead to important discussions in the classroom and at home and will give students a better understanding of what is currently going on in our country.
