My students love to read and talk about their reading. They spend very little time listening to me talk and a lot of time reading, writing about their reading, and talking about their reading. They are middle school students, so they are going through adolescence and will be able to connect to Starr and her experiences. My school is urban and extremely diverse. There is a good mix of white, black, and Hispanic students. The teachers are incredibly dedicated to teaching the whole-child and preparing them for high school. The schools in California are incredibly underfunded, but the teachers go to great efforts to make sure our students get what they need.
