I teach 13 year olds of varying learning styles and abilities and who face many economic challenges. They want to learn, but many come to me reading far below grade level, so I try to pick high interest novels to engage them because, although they are great kids, they get frustrated easily. That frustration leads them to believe that they can’t do the work and they shut down, which is frustrating for all of us. Just want to help them!
The Giver is a part of the 8th grade curriculum at my school and the kids love it, but the books that we have, that have been supplied by the school are ripped and missing pages, which affects the educational process. My students are struggling readers in an economically depressed area and I’d like to provide them with materials that are not torn and dilapidated to show them that they do matter and they are worth it. If they’re given new books, it could very well motivate them to work harder and do better which will improve their collective self-confidence
