My Students
My students are middle school students, age eleven to fourteen. They dedicate themselves before the school day, during the school day, and even on weekends to our school music program. I conduct five different ensembles in the school, including concert band, jazz band, and marching band. We participate in two annual music competitions; one statewide and one northeast regional. We also perform at our local elementary schools and during our Spring Musical. In addition to my performing classes, we have students in our Core Music program as well. These students learn the essentials and foundations of music, such as reading notation, counting rhythms, playing keyboard, and even performing on bucket drums.
My Project
I teach band and that includes several brass instruments; trumpet, trombone, French horn, baritone horn, and tuba. All of these instruments create condensation when hot air from the student's breath gets blown into a cold brass instrument. This also mixes with the student's own spit and needs to get released from inside the instrument tubing. All of these brass instruments have a spit valve, which does exactly that, releases the spit. The only problem is, there isn't a designated place in the room to do this, and, it would waste many minutes throughout the class period for students to continually get up and release the spit in a designated area. Therefore students release their spit directly on the floor. Yes, it may not be the most ideal situation but we get used to it as musicians. Well, we almost get used to it. Recently my 6th grade students were leaving the classroom and someone dropped their entire homework folder in a puddle of spit and it grossed out both myself and the student. This situation led me to requesting these steam mops; this floor must be cleaned!
