My Students

I can still smell the formaldehyde burning my nostrils upon entering the lab. I was never more excited or anxious to enter science class. The complexity of the circulatory and muscular system intrigued me. I knew from my first incision that I wanted to be a doctor.

Science can be the most engaging experience of a young student's academic life.

However, without hands on activities, students will never feel the excitement science has to offer. Throughout high school, my students never received the opportunity to experience this exciting side of science. My students are Freshmen at a small charter high school in California. Our students come from some of the most violent and dangerous neighborhoods within our city. It's not rare for one of our students to leave home at 5:30 in the morning just to catch the bus to school. However, it is this resolve that makes our school so special. Currently, we are one of the top performing high schools in California, achieving higher state test scores than many of the wealthier, larger public schools in the area. My freshmen are special. These students work tirelessly with the limited resources they have to better their situations.

My Project

I currently teach 9th grade Biology. Unfortunately, our school does not have the funding to provide me with lab supplies. Without these supplies, my students will lack the laboratory knowledge and experience required to excel in college level science departments. This limited experience will greatly hinder their ability to succeed in future science classes. Providing my students with a chance to perform hands on dissections will not only increase their retention of this year's content, but it will also prepare them to be successful at the next level. My students will use this first, hands on lab experience, to propel them to their dreams of becoming doctors, nurses, researchers, and engineers.

As an undergraduate student, I was fully set on becoming a doctor.

However, after spending just one year with these students, I have placed my medical plans on the back burner. My students have taught me more in the last year than I could ever dream of teaching them. By funding this project, you will be giving my students a hands on scientific experience that will provide them a chance of reaching their goals and attaining the life they so definitely deserve.
