Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in a large, urban city and attend one of four high schools in a geographic zone of choice. All of the daily transitions, 700-students-high school, and large community can lead to a sense of anonymity.

I make sure I learn everyone's name the first day of class and greet students at the door each day, by name.

I work to individualize their education and differentiate their experience by designing lessons that flow at their own pace. After an initial whole group engagement, students work through a series of activities, with a partner, their group, or individually, depending on the lesson. Extending the due dates and time to complete tasks allows students to work at their own pace and review content and lessons as needed before evaluation. I have found these strategies to increase student engagement and academic performance.

My Project

My students are certainly not unique in the respect that they have limited experience examining real fossils. Fortunately, I'm a citizen paleontologist and have quite a collection. This year as we looked at trilobites, knightia, ammonites, petrified wood, and gastropods, I discovered I didn't have an example of resin or amber fossils. By adding this to the collection students will have greater access to the content and fossil realia.

In addition to the fossil, this unit would be greatly enhanced by label tape, which will allow me to label each specimen with name and location.

The headphones allow each student to watch, rewatch, and pause the fossil videos without interrupting their peers, and the colored pencils are for color coding what has to happen to an organism when it dies for it to fossilize and eventually be discovered. Many students do not have their own colored pencils at home, so the assignment is difficult to complete.
