This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are awesome, and they deserve to be taught using colorful and engaging materials that could dramatically increase the rate of their progress. These high quality speech sound cue card decks were created in accordance with the strongest evidence based practices that the field of speech language pathology has right now, which means they are exponentially better than anything I currently am using. For example, if a student was working on /r/, (think "wing" for "ring" and "spidah" for "spider"), then these cards have target words that pair /r/ with vowels and consonants produced in the back of the mouth, which make /r/ easier to produce correctly, such as "run" "read" and "crumb". There are also cards that cue sounds without connecting them to the student's errors, such as "r" being a "truck sound" (think of the sound that trucks make when they start, it sounds like /r/ repeated), which allows the student to build a brand new sound instead of fighting muscle memory for the /r/ error. Overall, these recommended practices are complicated but are made readily accessible though these materials.

As much as I have wanted to make my own therapy materials, I just haven't had the capacity over the years to spend the time making cards that match the research coming out about how kids can remedy speech sound disorders the fastest.

I just saw the author of these materials speak at a conference (she is a world renowned expert on speech sound disorders!), and she inspired me to adopt the science based best practices that are present in these cards. My goal is for my students to correctly articulate all speech sounds by remediating their errors as quickly as possible.
