This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are amazing with limitless potentials. They are kind and are growing as citizens with empathy and understanding of other people's difficult situations. Most of them were born to and have been raised in families of low socio-economic status. My school is located in a low-poverty region in the suburbs of Los Angeles. Their backgrounds and environment affect their motivation, achievement, academic skills, and even future life. Even though they are middle school students, but they do not have basic literacy skills; as a result, they do not like reading. In fact, reading is a really boring job to them. As their teacher, however, I do know how powerful reading is and how it could change students' lives.
It's Not Too Late to Help Them Make a U-TURN!
Actually, my students do know that reading is essential to their success and crucial for their whole life careers as well as for their current school work. In light of EQUITY, however, my students need resources specific to their needs to become successful readers. I really want to provide my students with a fantastic reading light, cozy reading chairs and pillows, and fluffy reading carpet where they can dream about characters, communities, connections, and communications by developing reading and making it their favorite hobbies! At the very moment, I want to recall a great quote on reading (Mason Cooley): "Reading gives us some place to go when we have to stay where we are." The cozy reading place I want to give my students are not only for cultivation my students' reading, but also for creating their invisible paths to go some day. Thank you!
