Everything I Should Have - But I Don't...

My Students

I teach children in one of the most expensive cities in the country. My students come from a variety of economic backgrounds in an increasingly crowded inner-city environment. Most children come from homes where both parents work, and often students stay at school until 6:00 pm. It is often my responsibility to teach many 4th graders basic hygiene and good nutrition practices.

Many of my students come to school with the self-grooming habits of a nine-year-old (no self-grooming habits,) and carrying bags of junk food snacks they have purchased at a corner store.

This stuff is what they eat during recess, and chips and cheese puffs become their lunch. It is a struggle to teach these kids to keep clean and eat healthy food.

These kids deserve better.

My Project

Children spend far more time at school than they used to; 7-10 hours together at school can be difficult. When I think of all my own requirements throughout the day, I often wonder how my students are coping with "It's cold, and I'm hungry" in the middle of a math lesson...They are constantly going in and out of classrooms, up and down stairs, sitting, standing, learning and growing. Many kids seem to be always hungry, but there are times when they have no snack for recess, or they have bought their version of a snack (cheetos). It's freezing outside, but they often come to school with thin oversized hooded sweatshirt that is supposed to keep them "warm enough". It doesn't.
