Aloha from na keiki o Hawai'i. My preschool special education class provides early intervention services to qualifying special needs children with a range of disabling conditions, ages 3 to 5 years. Most of my students struggle to speak and to be understood and several have fine motor challenges. My school is located in a predominantly rural, low-income neighborhood with a considerable portion of the children of Hawaiian and/or Pacific Island ancestry.
Our classroom cheer sums it up: "You too, we too, we all love preschool!" We are a group of actively involved adults-teacher, aide, and therapists, and children working together in our hands-on learning environment.
My Project
This project originally started out simply as a request for a resupply of block printer inks and foam scratch sheets as we're running low. But as the saying goes, "one thing leads to another", hence the seemingly random assortment of items on the shopping list. And there's a good reason for each item.
I'm currently taking a early childhood math class, and there is an emphasis on frequent and diverse experiences involving the foundational skills of mathematical reasoning.
The cute family figurines counters and odd-shaped "pebbles" of various colors and sizes will be used for all kinds of engaging and challenging counting, sequencing and sorting activities.
Documentation! It's required for my math class, our school's accreditation process, and as our evidence for interventions and reports. Currently I have over 2000 pictures and videos on my phone--90% school related--and my phone is choking. I will use the high capacity iPod touch as our class camera and recorder. Because it's around little kids who may also do some of the picture taking, it needs to be protected, thus the inclusion of a solid case.
Quite simply, we need a new microwave oven as only the 1 minute button on our old one works, and I'm not sure how much longer it will last. We use the microwave for a multitude of activities including heating water for cleaning and cooking.
