My Students

"Everybody Smiles in the Same Language" is the creed I hope to instill in my first grade students. What a great way to remind them every day that we are global citizens of the world by having them gather as a community of learners on a World carpet.

My students are first graders who attend a K-5 California public school.

They are all inquisitive first graders who enjoy the rigor of thinking and learning every school day. They bring it!! They represent many cultures from around the world such as Poland, India, Colombia, and Mexico. They also represent students with special needs such as Down Syndrome, ADHD, speech and language, English language learners, and counseling. My students also have an important job, they are the buddy class to a first grade Special Day Class at our school site which they take very seriously. They provide appropriate language and social models for their buddies during mainstream opportunities during recesses, PE classes, center time, and monthly grade level centers.

My Project

By having our beautiful and colorful world carpet, my first graders will have an inviting place to gather as a community of learners. We gather on the carpet many times throughout the school day to share our thinking and learning. Currently, we make do with the original carpet laid decades ago which of course is drab and quite honestly musty. I am calling the carpet our "Everybody Smiles in the Same Language" carpet because it would be wonderful reminder each time that we gather on it just how lucky we are to be such a diverse community of learners with similarities and differences to celebrate. As part of my history/social science program, my students "travel" to 2 countries every month. We have recently traveled to Canada and England and the students are so interested in learning about each and every one of the countries they visit. The world carpet would also solidify their knowledge of the global community as they "travel" as global citizens around the world.

By providing my classroom with our "Everybody Smiles in the Same Language" rug, you will make a difference in their lives by providing a much-needed welcoming place for my students to gather as a community of learners in our classroom.

Also by providing them with our "Everybody Smiles in the Same Language" rug, it will continue to foster their love of learning about the global community. This thinking fosters the appreciation of the similarities and differences we have as global citizens
